Event Representation in Temporal and Geographic Context

چکیده
Digital Libraries often fail to connect their contents to the wider context of information resources available that are about the same persons, related persons, places, or time periods and the events that happen to those persons, at those places and in a given time period. In this paper we critically examine a number of standards for organizing collections of archival, historical, genealogical, news, and personal information to see what kinds of resources they offer for modeling events. We present our ongoing work using event models to enable effective use of digitized biographical texts for a digital library environment.

Orientalist Feminism; Representation of Muslim Women in Two American Novels: Terrorist and Falling Man
Several novels have appeared after the September 11 attacks whichdeal directly or indirectly with the effect of the event on individuals, both insideand outside of the United States. Though, the novels often claim to deal withthe post- traumatic aftermath of the incident, the writers regularly use Orientaliststereotyping and it seems that after 9/11 this attitude toward Muslims has hardenedand ...
متن کاملFrom Quantitative to Qualitative Spaces
Based on previous work, we present our position statement encompassing two mutually complementary topics. The first topic pertains to the ontological grounding of quantitatively specified synthetic environment data. Here, the objective is to generate a qualitative spatial description of a quantitatively modelled (e.g., using primitive geometric features) synthetic environment. The basic aim her...
متن کاملEvent-oriented approaches to geographic phenomena
This paper is about the information-theoretic foundations upon which useful explanatory and predictive models of dynamic geographic phenomena can be based. It traces the development over the last decade or so of these foundations, from sequences of temporal snapshots, through object life histories, to event chronicles. A crucial ontological distinction is drawn between “things” and “happenings”...
متن کاملContext-aware Modeling for Spatio-temporal Data Transmitted from a Wireless Body Sensor Network
Context-aware systems must be interoperable and work across different platforms at any time and in any place. Context data collected from wireless body area networks (WBAN) may be heterogeneous and imperfect, which makes their design and implementation difficult. In this research, we introduce a model which takes the dynamic nature of a context-aware system into consideration. This model is con...
متن کاملTemporal Reasoning and Bayesian Networks
This work examines important issues in probabilistic temporal representation and reasoning using Bayesian networks (also known as belief networks). The representation proposed here utilizes temporal (or dynamic) probabilities to represent facts, events, and the effects of events. The architecture of a belief network may change with time to indicate a different causal context. Probability variat...
